Choosing the Right Granule for Produce Crates — Why MFI Is Critical
The right granule for fruit & vegetable crate production is black PP granule with an MFI of 12–17, 120-mesh filtration and ≤ 0.5% ash content. These three values are critical for complete mold filling, surface quality and uninterrupted machine operation.
Why MFI 12–17?
A crate mold is a thin-walled, large-volume part — the material must flow quickly into the farthest corners. Granules below MFI 12 cause short shots and weld lines; above 17 risks flash and strength loss. The ideal range for crate producers is 12–17 g/10min — exactly the range of Abar Plastik's injection series.
Why does filtration matter?
Micro particles remaining in recycled material pass into the granule with insufficient filtration and cause nozzle blockages, hot-runner constrictions and scratches on mold surfaces during production. 120-mesh filtration traps these particles at our facility — not in your machine.
Ash content and surface quality
≤ 0.5% ash indicates granule purity. High-ash granule produces dull surfaces, colour inconsistency and brittle corners on crates. Since a crate is a handling product, corner strength is critical.
What to check in a sample
- Are granule sizes uniform? (Scattered sizing → inconsistent melting)
- Do two batches match in colour? (Colour stability → stable masterbatch dosing)
- Does the manufacturer provide MFI/density/ash reports?
- Do crate corners fill completely in trial molding?
